International Teaching

Do International Teachers Need a Teaching Licence?

Short answer

Often yes, but not everywhere and not for every school type. International schools operate inside national or local regulatory systems, so a recognised teaching licence, teacher status or registration may be required by the country, school or both.

International does not mean outside local regulation

A school can follow an international curriculum while still being subject to local teacher-appointment rules. The licence or status required can differ between countries, and some private-school systems have their own appointment or registration processes.

Check the destination before accepting an offer

Ask the employer which teaching licence or status it accepts, then confirm that information with the regulator where possible. Also check degree attestation, police clearance and work-permit documentation because these can be separate from the teaching licence.

Dubai example

KHDA publishes qualification and appointment guidance for teaching staff in Dubai private schools and requires faculty-registration documentation.

England example

QTS is required in maintained primary, secondary and special schools, while other school types have different legal flexibility.

Evidence to check

  • Teacher licence/status requirement
  • School-sector rule
  • Degree attestation/equivalency
  • Work-permit eligibility

How LCT UK training may fit

LCT professional development can strengthen an international profile, but it does not grant a national teaching licence unless an external authority separately does so.

Common mistake

Assuming a private international school can ignore all national teacher-regulation rules.

Practical next steps

  1. Ask the school for its required teacher status.
  2. Check the regulator's published rule.
  3. Verify your existing licence or registration.
  4. Keep professional development separate from statutory eligibility.

Bottom line

Many international teachers need a recognised licence or status, but the exact requirement is country- and school-specific. Verify before applying or relocating.
