TEFL & TESOL

Do I Need a Degree to Teach English With TEFL?

Short answer

Not every TEFL course requires a degree, but many overseas teaching jobs and work-permit systems do. A TEFL certificate can train you to teach English; it cannot override a country's degree requirement for employment.

Course entry and job eligibility are separate

You may be able to enrol in TEFL without a bachelor's degree, yet still find that a destination country or employer requires one before it can sponsor or appoint you. The degree is often an immigration or employment condition rather than a TEFL-course condition.

Check the destination before paying for TEFL

South Korea's EPIK programme requires at least a bachelor's degree. China's foreign-language teacher work-permit guidance also refers to bachelor's-level education, subject to specified exemptions from experience requirements. Other markets can be more flexible.

TEFL course eligibility

Provider rules determine whether you can study the course.

Employment and visa eligibility

Government and employer rules determine whether you can legally work in the destination.

Evidence to check

  • Degree requirement in the destination
  • Employer requirement
  • Work-permit eligibility
  • TEFL course entry rules

Relevant LCT UK TEFL/TESOL options

If you do not have a degree, ask LCT about course eligibility, but separately research realistic job markets before treating TEFL as an employment pathway.

Common mistake

Assuming that because a TEFL provider accepts you onto a course, every country will accept you for a teaching visa.

Practical next steps

  1. Choose target countries first.
  2. Check government work-permit rules.
  3. Check employer degree requirements.
  4. Then decide whether TEFL supports a realistic route.

Bottom line

You may not need a degree to study TEFL, but you may need one to use TEFL for overseas employment. The destination decides.
